History of Bikini Wearing
The history of the bikini can be traced back to antiquity. As far back as the Roman Empire, illustrations of women wearing bikini-like garments have unearthed. Louis Reard, a French engineer, introduced the modern bikini in 1946 worn by model, MichelineBernardini. The name "bikini" is derived from Bikini Atoll, where post-war atomic bomb testing was happening. Jacques Heim also introduced a two-piece bathing suit the same year called "Atome," in the French Riviera of Cannes. Heim's design reached the public first, but the name "bikini" given by Reard is what would stick.
The bikini design was welcomed by the French women, but deemed risqué or scandalous by the Catholic Church and the media. In 1951 the bikini was worn in the Miss World beauty pageant for the first time, but was then banned from the competition. Between 1951 and 1960 a few women in Hollywood were seen wearing a bikini, but when Ursula Andress emerged from the ocean waters in a sexy bikini for the movie "Dr. No" in 1962, the world seemed to take notice. The 1960's were the beginning of the bikini era. All over the world, women were wearing this new style of two-piece bathing suit on the beaches.
Today, bikinis are everywhere on the beaches. The bikini has become more of a beach "outfit." Women have begun accessorizing their bikinis as they do any outfit with jewelry and matching sandals to complete their look.
